Iraq
To the editor:
I am writing in response to February 7th's Clock article "Warmonger Propaganda in the New York Times" by Mike Longo. In the Editorial Mr. Longo says that millions of innocent Iraqi civilians will die at the hands of our armed forces and that "One day of holocaust is not enough though, for the next day 400 more bombs will further decimate the civilian population." He even says that our men and women who will be fighting this war, intend on vaporizing innocent people. Anyone who supports removing an evil regime that massacred more people than will die in the upcoming conflict, according to Mr. Longo, does not have an ounce of humanity in them. How more insulting can a student of Higher Education be?
To assume that Americans who will be fighting this war, will be purposely seeking to kill innocent people, is ridiculous and is about as far out in left field that any rational human being could possibly be. Mr. Longo must also assume that we have not learned anything from the Vietnam War. That we have not worked to improve our missile capabilities and engagement strategies. He would rather tell us that we do not recognize the fact that part of the reality of war, is that innocent people will die. Well, Mr. Longo, we do know the realities. People will die. But if we do go to war, it won't be because the primary objective is to seek out innocent civilians and massacre them!
Mr. Longo would probably agree that there is one man that could prevent a future conflict. That all this one individual has to do is disarm and verify. Saddam Hussein is the man who can end this. Does Mr. Longo believe that Saddam Hussein is going to give in because he is afraid innocent people will die? Obviously not. If Saddam truly cared about his people he would show more cooperation with the U.N inspectors and come clean. But he hasn't and it is evident that he is more concerned about remaining in power than he is about the prospect of peace.
To go as far to compare our military to that of Hitler's Nazi Germany is idiotic and the article is far from something I would call constructive or accurate. Mr.Longo never offers an alternative. He never once mentions the word "peace". Instead he makes assumptions and offers proof to why Saddam Hussein is still in power. Because some people would rather write about their biases than offer anything valuable to an ongoing debate. They like to complain. They like to hide behind their pens and find anything that will accommodate their need to be noticed. It doesn't matter to them if they offend anyone. They know all. Do no wrong. And dammit, they love to see their name in bold print where everyone can see it.
