Holiday Season Jobs For Students
(NAPSI)—If you or someone you care about is among America’s estimated 20 million college students, the holidays could include a particular present for you: a great seasonal job.
The Job Picture
The holidays are often a time students seek seasonal work, as a way to earn extra money to put towards tuition, or just have extra spending money. A recent survey of Americans who hold, have held or would consider taking a seasonal job shows that of potential seasonal workers, over 40% plan to put their earnings towards holiday gifts, over 20% for school expenses, and over 20% for paying student loans.
Fortunately for these young people, a global leader in package delivery and logistics—UPS—anticipates a very busy holiday shipping season, and is hiring about 100,000 seasonal employees to deal with the extra packages.
“We expect another record Peak Season this year, with daily package deliveries nearly doubling compared to our average of 20 million per day,” said Danelle McCusker, UPS’s head of U.S. human resources. “In order to make that happen, once again we’re recruiting about 100,000 people for some of the country’s best seasonal jobs.”
What You Can Get
Perks at UPS for students home for the holidays include:
1. Flexible hours, including multiple shifts, so you can fit work into your schedule
2. Competitive hourly pay
3. The UPS Earn and Learn program, which offers eligible seasonal student employees the ability to earn up to $1,300 towards college expenses, in addition to their hourly pay.
Planning For Your Future
Applicants thinking about getting a permanent job should know these seasonal and part-time jobs have long served as a foot in the door to a career at UPS. In fact, 35 percent of the people UPS hired in the past four years for seasonal package handler jobs stayed with the company on a permanent basis after the holidays, and nearly a third of the company’s current global workforce started in seasonal positions.
That’s important to many students. Nearly 70% want their seasonal job to turn into a full-time position, according to the recent survey. And nearly all agreed that seasonal and temporary jobs are a good way to move into a permanent, full-time career. Permanent UPS jobs—including part-time jobs—come with great pay and benefits, including healthcare and retirement benefits.
