The Plymouth Playlist
We’ve got an early edition of the Plymouth Playlist this print since we won’t have another paper out until the end of March. A lot is coming up this month from college basketball, Irish holidays, and, of course, the excitement of Spring Break. We cover it all here with seven suggestions for songs, and even ballads, to enjoy and slide into your monotonous playlist. No need to thank us for our suggestions, we do it all for the benefit of the people.
As always, if you want to contribute to next month’s Plymouth Playlist, send your suggestions to mtm1027@plymouth.edu with a short summary as to why your choice works in preparation for April. Please keep summaries to around 100 words.
Humble-Kendrick Lamar
March Madness is on the horizon and basketball games will no doubt be on everyone’s screens. This song may be overplayed now, almost a year after the Grammy winning album DAMN by Kendrick Lamar first released, but I really couldn’t care. This song is still a banger and a perfect edition to any basketball playlist. “Humble” has been featured in promotion of Lebron James’ “Shut Up and Dribble” docuseries on Showtime. It has become a part of protests from players on the role of professional athletes in voicing their political opinions. At the end of the day, it’s all about being humble.
The Foggy Dew- Sinead O’Connor
St. Patrick’s Day will come around on Sunday, March 17th this year and it is very much still an Irish holiday. This ballad by Sinead O’Connor is a tribute to those who died in the Easter Rising event of 1916. This song has also served as UFC star Conor Mcgregor’s entrance music. It is a calm, yet forceful, melody that works very well for calling forth the nicer weather of Spring.
The Rains of Castamere- The National
It is sooooo close now. You know what I’m talking about. Game of Thrones is right around the corner. We talked about its return last month, but the clock is ticking and we’re almost home. The land of Westeros shall return to HBO on April 14th, so why would we not celebrate by listening to “The Rains of Castamere?” The song tells the story of House Reyne being destroyed by House Lannister, setting up one of the most powerful and dangerous families in the show’s canon. If the numerous Buzzfeed personality quizzes I’ve taken mean anything, then I have to be voting for a Lannister win this April. We’ll just have to wait and find out.
Big Poppa- The Notorious B.I.G
The anniversary of the death of this legendary rapper is March 9th and I would recommend revisiting his iconic song “Big Poppa.” The songs fantastic high-pitched key notes highlight the lyrics that tell a story or smooth talking and charm. The fame and love for B.I.G. over twenty years after his death proves just how sensational of a rapper he was, and potentially could’ve been.
My Best Habit - The Maine
I have to say, I love pre-release songs for albums. Two weeks ago, Billie Eilish put out pre-releases for her new album (coming out March 29th). Per their usual schedule, The Maine is also putting out pre-release songs for their new album (ALSO coming out March 29th). This is one of those songs. If you’re a fan of the band, this and their other pre-release- even though they’re released as singles- should have you excited.
Ode To Sleep - Twenty One Pilots
Daylight Saving Time starts this month and that means “losing” an hour of sleep. If you’re like me, you’ll forget to go to bed an hour earlier to account for the proverbial springing ahead of the clock and only get four hours of sleep instead of five. So, when we’re all tired and cursing Benjamin Franklin’s antiquated idea… see above song title.
Up Up & Away - Kid Cudi
Spring break is upon us, friends. Whether that means you’re going to Spain or Cancun or Lord knows where else, be sure to pack some feel good summer-y tunes. While this album, like a lot of Cudi’s music, can be a little sleepy at times, there’s definitely some songs that fit the bill. This happens to be my favorite of the lot and is always in my summer work playlists. Maybe it’ll even help you forget the fact that you’ll be returning to single digit temperatures when you return.
